The National Museum of Art, Osaka opened in 1977 in the former Expo Museum of Fine Arts, located within Expo ’70 Commemorative Park in Suita, Osaka Prefecture. The museum relocated to a new building on Nakanoshima in 2004, and in 2027 it will mark its 50th anniversary. As that milestone approaches, the 2026 collection exhibition spans two installments, drawing on the museum’s own holdings to revisit developments in art, and the social and historical conditions that shaped them, in the years leading up to the museum’s opening. The museum has positioned itself as an institution focused on contemporary art, collecting and exhibiting Japanese and international works produced primarily from 1945 to the present. The collection, however, also includes works made prior to this period. Every past age was, in its own time, contemporary, and the art of today is built on the thought and creativity accumulated over that long succession of present moments.

We will be holding a solo exhibition, "Slow Motion," by Yamanashi-based illustrator mame. This will be her first exhibition at NPP. This exhibition will feature new works themed around such memories, like a scene from a film played in slow motion. mame Lives in Yamanashi Prefecture. Her style is characterized by single-panel illustrations that have a sense of everyday life and a touch of nostalgia. Her published works include the illustrated comic collections "A Guide to the Rooms of Women Living Alone in Tokyo" and "A Day in the Life of Two in Tokyo" (Shoei-sha).

To acknowledge that existence, I decided to embrace the fancy things within me ♡ MATKA | Matoka After working as a creator at a special effects production company for commercials, she works as a sculptor creating character prototypes and stuffed animals. At the same time, she started the stuffed animal and accessory brand "MATKA" in 2008. She has been presenting ceramic works since 2017.

Rintaro Jr. Special Exhibition: "The Ghost's True Form Revealed: Withered Pampas Grass" "The Ghost's True Form Revealed: Withered Pampas Grass" is a haiku composed by the haiku poet Yokoi Yayu in the mid-Edo period.

Based on the "STRAND" concept that director Hideo Kojima has depicted throughout the *DEATH STRANDING* series—the idea of ​​"reconnecting people in a divided world"—a new "STRAND" that transcends the boundaries of games and connects various genres and cultures will be launched from Shinsaibashi PARCO, following its launch in Shibuya. He is in charge of art direction for the entire work, including character, background, and mecha design. He left KONAMI in 2015 and joined Kojima Productions, the creative studio founded by Hideo Kojima. In the *DEATH STRANDING* series, he is responsible for character and mecha design, as well as overall art direction.

This program delves into Andrew Wyeth's career as a painter, his relationships with the places and people he depicted, and the thoughts and worldview he imbued in his work. For lunch, we will offer a menu featuring specialty dishes and ingredients from Pennsylvania, the birthplace of Andrew Wyeth, a nationally beloved painter known for his depictions of America, and Maine, where he spent his summers. One of Andrew Wyeth's favorite painting techniques is tempera. This technique, which flourished from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, uses a mixture of egg yolk, pigment, and water, resulting in a dry texture distinct from oil painting. While it has many limitations, tempera, which simultaneously produces gentle tones and a sense of depth, blends well with the worldview of Wyeth's work, giving rise to many masterpieces.

JITSUZAISEI is pleased to announce that Koichiro Kojima's third solo exhibition, "Anesthesia Landscape," will be held from October 10th (Sat) to October 25th (Sun), 2026. Koichiro Kojima was born in Osaka in 1986. His family runs a photography studio in Takatsuki, which has been in operation since 1924.

Kojiro Matsukata and Tokutaro Yamamura, who amassed collections of Western modern art and Japanese contemporary art respectively, wished to give people the opportunity to appreciate wonderful art. Their wish has been carried on, and their works are now housed in museums in Tokyo and Kobe. This time, we are borrowing Rodin's sculptures from the Matsukata Collection at the National Museum of Western Art to exhibit alongside the Yamamura Collection held by our museum. *This exhibition is held as part of a collaborative project by the National Art Research Center utilizing the collections of national museums. Wang Yiting (1867-1938), who was active in China during the late Qing and early Republican periods, was a Shanghai businessman and philanthropist, as well as a master of the Haijian School. He visited Japan many times, becoming a bridge for cultural exchange between Japan and China. To commemorate the 160th anniversary of his birth, we will look back on his achievements and the era in which he lived.

Lucie Rie, one of the leading ceramic artists of the 20th century, was born in Vienna, Austria in 1902. Fascinated by the art of pottery at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, she pursued a career in ceramics, establishing herself as an artist by winning numerous awards at international exhibitions. However, the impending war cast a shadow over her work. In 1938, forced into exile, Lucie Rie moved her base of operations to England, where she continued to create in London for approximately half a century. Norikatsu Sato (Ceramic Artist, Member of the Japan Crafts Association): The charm of Lucie Rie's work lies in the forms that combine suppleness and tension, and the rich variety of glazes and decorations, each carefully formulated to suit its individual form. The vibrant glazes and delicate decorations, such as sgraffito, bring a unique rhythm and rich expression to the vessels. When Lucie Rie's sensibility is added to these techniques, a captivating world of works is created that possesses both delicacy and modernity. As a related event to the "Lucie Rie Exhibition," we have planned a workshop where you can experience Lucie Rie's production techniques. You will apply paint with a brush to bisque-fired pottery and then use a special needle to scrape away the surface and create patterns. Imagine the colors and patterns that suit the shape and create your own wonderful piece of pottery. We look forward to your participation.

Eric Carle, Caterpillar with a Frame (PR poster soliciting donations for the opening of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art), 2002, Collection of the Eric and Barbara Carle Foundation. © 2002 Penguin Random House LLC. This exhibition is a retrospective of Eric Carle (1929-2021), one of America's leading picture book authors. His picture book, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," with its varying paper sizes on each page and holes representing the caterpillar's eating, continues to be loved by children around the world. This exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Japanese edition of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and is held with the full cooperation of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts, USA. (Examples of other works include "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" (1969) and "Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me!") The exhibition features original illustrations from 27 picture books, including "The Little Toy Ducks" (1986) and "Ten Little Toy Ducks" (2005), along with approximately 180 other items, such as works from his time as a graphic designer, dummy books created in the initial conceptual stages of ideas, and materials used for collages (colored and patterned paper). We hope you will experience the vibrant colors of the original illustrations, the ingenuity of his bookbinding as a designer, and the gentle gaze he poured into his picture books for children.

Katsushika Hokusai is a representative artist of Ukiyo-e. Known for frequently changing his artist name throughout his life, Hokusai used the name "Hokusai" for approximately 18 years, from age 37 (Kansei 8, 1796) to age 54 (Bunka 10, 1813). From the late Kansei period onward, Hokusai provided richly colored illustrations for illustrated kyoka books, becoming a leading figure in this field. When the popularity of yomihon (fictional novels) began during the Bunka period (1804-1818), he collaborated with playwrights such as Kyokutei Bakin, leading the yomihon boom with his overwhelming artistic skill and volume of work. Furthermore, he produced numerous single-sheet woodblock prints depicting beautiful women, famous places, and plays, and his energetic work on original paintings is also characteristic of this period.
